to take students to a level of at least transactional proficiency (1+ on the ISLPR scale). Students will: be able to express by use of complete sentences their thoughts and opinions on familiar topics and their dreams, desires, wishes, emotions, fears and doubts; be able to read and write fluently simple continuous prose and begin to read more difficult authentic texts as well as literary discourse; become familiar with various aspects of French culture and acquire a basic understanding of the history of French literature from Medieval times to the Renaissance, study some texts from this period and gain familiarity with terms and aspects of literary criticism.
