Recent Australian Fiction

Students read some of the most interesting and influential works of Australian fiction and related genres of the last 40 years, with a particular emphasis on recent decades. The subject emphasises the development of an Australian tradition of fictional writing and the progressive blurring of boundaries between the categories of fiction, non-fiction, biography and history. It also looks at the dramatic changes in the literary environment during this time and at political and social influences on literary writing and publication.

Learning Objectives:

a detailed knowledge of each of the set texts;

a familiarity with the critical reception of the set texts and the secondary literature surrounding them;

an understanding of the changes in the generic boundaries of Australian literature;

an understanding of the influence of social, political and literary developments in the period;

a sense of the progressive development of an identifiably Australian tradition of writing.

Assessment by essay (40%); seminar participation (20%); examination (40%).
