The Avant-Garde in the Twentieth Century

Through a detailed study of imaginative and non-fictional texts in English and in translation as well as other artistic works such as painting, theatre, cinema and music, this subject explores the variety, complexity and cultural significance of 20th century avant-garde movements such as Experimental Modernism, Futurism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dada and Surrealism.

Learning Objectives:

to broaden and intensify the literary-critical skills and understanding attained by students at earlier levels, particularly where essay writing and extra-literary issues are concerned;

to develop a comprehensive understanding of the set texts;

to acquire a broad knowledge of avant-garde movements and the cultural and historical contexts in which they developed;

to acquire sound knowledge of the critical and theoretical issues relevant to avant-garde.

Assessment by essays (40%); tutorial participation (20%); examination (40%).
