26 hours lectures, 10 hours tutorials. Semester 1.

The subject involves in depth explorations of a wide range of Australian poetry, organised thematically around selections from the set text, supplemented by other material. Topics covered may include: the Indigenous; war; the regions; death; childhood; masculinity and femininity; performance poetry.

Learning Objectives:

a detailed knowledge of the majority of poems in the set text;

a high degree of competence in analysing poetry in terms of both content and form;

an understanding of major contemporary Australian poetic styles;

an understanding of the different critical and contextual approaches to the reading of poetry.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (40%); tutorial attendance and participation (20%); essays (40%).
