A study of representative Australian works of the Modern period.

Learning Objectives:

to broaden and intensify the literary-critical skills and understanding attained by students at earlier levels;

to acquire a detailed knowledge of each of the texts set for study;

to develop an understanding of the cultural, social and literary milieu in which the texts originated;

to acquire some knowledge of the history of their critical reception and the factors determining this;

to develop research skills, to use the library resources and meet the editorial conventions of the discipline.

Assessment by essays (40%); tutorial participation (20%); examination (40%).
