The Literature of Spirituality

A close textual study is made of a range of literary works on spiritual themes, selected from ancient Indian tradition, the Bible and contemporary and traditional English prose and poetry.

Learning Objectives:

to attain a sound knowledge and understanding of the set texts;

to develop an ability to recognise and analyse themes across a range of literary genres and traditions;

to acquire an awareness of differences and similarities in spiritual themes and their expression in different cultures and periods;

to develop an awareness of the strengths and limitations of literature as an instrument of spiritual quest and exposition;

to attain knowledge of an important developmental strand in English poetic tradition and of the strong tradition of spiritual writing in English literature from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (40%); tutorial attendance and participation (20%); essays (40%).
