80 hours flexible delivery. External by World Wide Web internationally. Semester 2 (July to October). This subject requires access to Web-based materials therefore students should ensure that they have access to the World Wide Web. Information on requirements is available from the School of Education.

Available to Postgraduate Certificate of Education and Master of Education (Rural Studies) students in Canada.

This subject acquaints students with the particular concerns experienced by people living in rural areas. Appropriate theoretical constructs are drawn upon and tested against practical situations. The subject content is illuminated with the results of recent research undertaken in Queensland, other states and where appropriate, abroad. Whilst the emphasis will be on rural communities and rural education, attention will also be given to other professionals eg. health workers in rural areas. Issues of rural education policy at local state/province and national levels will be critically reviewed. Recent concerns related to the role of the school in community sustainability will be introduced.

Learning Objectives:

demonstrate a critical understanding of the literature dealing with the characteristics of rurality and demographic trends, rural schooling and issues in rural education such as multi-grade classrooms, distance education and communications and technology;

understand the nature of rural schools and teaching in rural areas;

understand the current socio-economic issues in and characteristics of rural communities;

engage with confidence in rural community and economic development debates, issues and developments.

Assessment by essay (20%); teletutorial (15%); essay (15%); reflective journal - journal (25%); critical review (25%).
