Environmental Education for Tropical Australia

20 hours lectures, 10 hours tutorials (Web), 10 hours field work. Semester 2.

Available ONLY to students enrolled in the Postgraduate Certificate of Education and Master of Education.

The subject examines contemporary ideas and innovations in environmental education with an emphasis on practice in the Australian tropics. Utilising a `pedagogy of place', the subject aims to develop and deepen professional understandings of environmental education policy, curriculum design, teaching and learning approaches and implementation issues within school and community settings. The field work component covers a range of local education sites in and for local marine and terrestrial environments.

Learning Objectives:

become familiar with contemporary ideas of, policy for and approaches to environmental education in Australia and internationally;

develop knowledge and understandings of curriculum development and pedagogical practice in relation to environmental education in tropical environments;

reflect and evaluate current educational practices in relevant professional settings;

build a repertoire of teaching, learning and research skills for continuing environmental education practice in school and community settings.

Assessment by tutorial attendance and participation (10%); field work (20%); essays (30%); research project (40%).
