Issues in Torres Strait Education

This subject examines the education of Torres Strait Islander students historically to the present in the light of various research and policy documents. Students identify and closely examine a wide range of issues that impact on Torres Strait Islander students and their communities in order to propose some resolutions of these issues.

Learning Objectives:

understand and explain the complexity of issues, including their historical origins, confronting Torres Strait Islanders, their various communities and teachers;

critically examine a variety of approaches which have been proposed as useful for teaching Torres Strait Islanders;

develop approaches and modifications to core curriculum and its assessment in order to improve education for and with Torres Strait Islanders.

Assessment by test (30%); web-based discussion of three issues (30%); 3,500 word essay on preferred teaching/curriculum approach (40%).
