Collaborative Workplace Professional Development

Semester 1. External via World Wide Web nationally and internationally. This subject requires access to web-based material. Students wishing to study this subject off-campus should ensure that they have access to the World Wide Web. Information on requirements is available from the School of Education.

Available to Postgraduate Certificate, BEd (Professional Development) and Master of Education students.

This subject is designed to foster collaborative professional development in schools. It provides an opportunity for teachers and administrators to examine school-based research findings on adult workplace learning, critical reflection and a range of specific strategies for promoting collaborative professional development. Students are required to plan, implement and critically evaluate a workplace project within an action research frame, designed to enrich teachers' professional development and their effectiveness in enhancing learner outcomes. As part of the negotiated project, students will trial a selection of strategies including: professional dialogue, critical incident analysis, collated learner feedback, peer coaching, mentoring and clinical supervision. Students will be required to negotiate, implement and critically evaluate an action research project for collaborative professional development relevant to their workplace.

Learning Objectives:

describe a workplace setting and its current contextual influences and pressures;

frame and produce an action research proposal relevant to a specific workplace;

investigate and critically review the literature on collaborative workplace learning;

trial and critically evaluate a variety of approaches to collaborative professional development.

Assessment by project description and annotated bibliography (2,000 words) (20%); report and evaluation of action research project (3,500 words) (80%).
