Foundations of Guidance and Student Welfare

This subject examines three topics that underpin the work of guidance officers as they seek to promote the welfare of students in P-12 school settings. It will focus on setting priorities in the GO role, issues in addressing students' social/emotional problems and applying an understanding of effective learning to(a) supporting students' academic progress and (b) helping them to deal with their social/emotional problems.

Learning Objectives:

document the task priorities of a practising guidance officer;

demonstrate understanding of complexities in addressing social/emotional problems;

identify how a GO might use an understanding of a range of factors in effective learning to support students' academic progress and to help them deal with their social/emotional problems.

Assessment by report (10%); discussion paper 1 (30%); discussion paper 2 (60%).
