20 hours lectures, 24 hours workshops/seminars, 200 hours placement. Semester 2. Limited Attendance.

Available only to students enrolled in the Master of Guidance and Counselling.

Utilising the Integrated Developmental Model (IDM) (Stolenberg, McNeill & Delworth, 1998) of counsellor development, this subject is designed to meet the Australian Board of Certified Counsellors (ABCC) requirements of 200 hours of counselling and associated practice. Field-based placements, along with verbal, written and recorded case presentations with an emphasis upon reflective practice and peer support assist the novice counsellor to develop the skills necessary for quality ethical practice.

Learning Objectives:

ability to present cases in verbal and written forms that demonstrate advanced reasoning;

ability to critically reflect on one's own and others counselling practice to facilitate individual and team skill development;

achievement of development as a counsellor to a Level 1 (IDM) standard, with evidence of (or ability to) transition into Level 2.

Assessment by verbal and taped case study presentation (50%); reflective journal (30%); resource folder (20%).
