Action Research for Educational Development

80 hours flexible delivery. External via World Wide Web internationally. Semester 2 (November to February). This subject requires access to Web-based materials therefore students should ensure that they have access to the World Wide Web. Information on requirements is available from the School of Education.

Available to Postgraduate Certificate of Education and Master of Education (Rural Studies) students in Canada.

This subject develops the skills and understandings involved in community based educational action research as a means to school and community development. Key topics include: traditions in educational action research; review of action research literature, including web sites; critical review of research on consultative processes in educational development in culturally diverse contexts; situational analysis and assessment of educational needs in culturally diverse contexts; community consultation and cross-cultural processes; collaborative goal-setting, monitoring and evaluation. Collaborative partnerships between schools and rural communities and Indigenous communities are particularly relevant to this subject. The subject will be developed through a collaborative educational action research project.

Learning Objectives:

critically review collaborative educational action research and practice in culturally diverse settings;

apply a collaborative action research process to an aspect of educational development;

develop relevant skills of community consultation, situational and needs analysis, cross-cultural communication, collaborative goal setting, monitoring and evaluation;

develop and apply an educational action research project in consultation with school communities.

Assessment by reading report (10%); teleconference (10%); research proposal (10%); literature review (20%); action research project report (50%).
