Internship Research Project

[To be introduced in 2005]

Townsville, Cairns, External

HECS Band 1

12 hours tutorials, 100 hours placement. Semester 2.

Available only to students enrolled in the Master of Teaching.

Staff:

Ms A Hill (Townsville campus);

Dr P Matters (Cairns campus).

The intern will engage with, and contribute to, processes for change and development within schools through participating in a negotiated project and class teaching. This will provide the opportunity for practice without appraisal and direct supervision, as well as to encourage beginning teachers to see their role in schools as more than classroom teaching. Action research will be the inquiry method within the intern project, and the intern will complete a range of activities to ensure the development of appropriate research skills.

Learning Objectives:

to promote the professional growth of interns through the application of theoretical and research-based knowledge and practices in school contexts;

to provide a more seamless transition from preservice to the beginning teaching phase of teaching;

to develop collaborative relationships between prospective and experienced teachers;

to develop preservice teachers' identity within a professional network.

Assessment by on-line tutorial attendance and participation (25%); successful participation in internship (75%).
