This subject focuses on teaching pupils who have difficulties with reading. No single approach is appropriate for all pupils who have difficulty, and therefore the teacher's task is to devise the most appropriate program for each individual. In order to approach this task a teacher requires two fundamental resources, apart from other teaching skills. The first is an awareness of the complexities of reading, so that the task is not underestimated, and individual problems may be better understood. The second is knowledge of a range of assessment and teaching techniques, so that the teacher has sufficient resources to draw upon when devising individual programs.

The aim of this subject is to enhance participants' knowledge of the reading process, difficulties that pupils may experience with reading and assessment and teaching techniques.

Learning Objectives:

critically examine models of the reading process;

explore complexities in the reading process;

explore difficulties that pupils may experience in learning to read;

critically examine a range of strategies for assessing and teaching pupils who have difficulties with reading.

Assessment by two tests on subject materials (30% each); written assignment (40%).
