Research Methodologies in Education

Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Honours).

This subject can be undertaken either as an introduction to the honours program or as a research elective. It provides an overview of a range of methodologies used in educational research. Its purposes are: to give students some knowledge of and competence in research methods; to enable students to understand the theoretical and philosophical assumptions underpinning different research approaches; to enable students to ask research questions and plan how to answer them; to plan their own research project in consultation with their pro tem supervisor and to write and present their research proposal and the forms required for ethics approval.

Learning Objectives:

critical understanding of the nature and purposes of major approaches to educational research and describe their potential applications to educational issues;

a familiarity with basic research methods and ethics in educational inquiry and plan a manageable research project.

Assessment by workshops (40%); research proposal or project (50%); oral presentation (10%).
