This subject provides an introduction to analysing, developing and teaching language and literacy practices in secondary classrooms. It focuses on different approaches to text analysis and on issues surrounding linguistic diversity in Australian classrooms. It provides a basis for graduate education students to engage with a range of topics including adolescent language and literacy development; teaching English as a second language to Indigenous students and to students whose first language or dialect is not standard Australian English; different approaches to teaching critical literacy practices; understanding and managing workplace literacy practices.

Learning Objectives:

develop knowledge and understanding in the field of language and literacy education;

explore different approaches to developing a range of linguistic competencies;

investigate and analyse classroom literacy practices.

Assessment by tutorial participation and text analysis (20%); field study (40%); final examination (40%).
