Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Graduate Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Graduate BEd students are required to take this subject with or before ED3491 if it is their first teaching area. It is recommended to be taken before ED3491 if it is their second teaching area.

This subject provides a general introduction to English education in the secondary school, focussing particularly on Years 8-10. Topics include: English education syllabus development; the theoretical language basis from which current English syllabus documents in Queensland have been constructed; the concept of `genre' and genre theory central to this syllabus; lesson and unit planning in Years 8-10 English; pedagogies of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing as they apply to the English classroom; and to issues of literacy, disadvantage and student diversity.

Learning Objectives:

read and reflect critically on theoretical debates and professional resources for the middle school English classroom;

understand and apply knowledge about language and language learning to professional English education contexts in the middle school;

design engaging, effective and theoretically sound learning experiences for the middle school English classroom that respect and value student diversity;

gather and evaluate textual material for the English classroom from a range of sites, including global information sources.

Assessment by English education portfolio (50%); examination (50%).
