Secondary Science Curriculum

Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Graduate Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Graduate BEd students are required to take this subject with or before ED3491 if it is their first teaching area. It is recommended to be taken before ED3491 if it is their second teaching area.

Learning and teaching science in the secondary school will be the focus of this subject. During the program, students should become familiar with the syllabus requirements in Junior Science (Science Years 1-10 syllabus). The issues addressed throughout the subject will be grounded in practice and informed by current research and philosophical positions. Some of these topics will include: conceptual learning, concept mapping, learning environments, scientific literacy, teaching strategies, "constructivism" as a referent for practice, curriculum materials and professional practice.

Learning Objectives:

review current research in secondary school science education and interpret its implications for classroom practice;

construct viable models or referents for professional practice;

develop an understanding of knowledge, learning and appropriate teaching strategies;

develop basic competencies in planning lessons, selecting strategies and considering constraints to effective implementation of plans;

reflect on their professional activities.

Assessment by assignment (30%); participation (10%); examination (60%).
