Arts Education for Early Childhood

This subject introduces students to the KLA Arts with particular emphasis on visual art and music for young children to year three. The visual art strand explores aims, concepts, strategies, art media, safety and techniques, planning for effective teaching and learning, literacy, appraising, display and evaluation. A critical approach tracks historical art education trends and recent challenges aimed at greater inclusivity. The music strand critically examines a philosophy of music education commonly found in Australian schools. The music development of young children is studied. Movement games and a singing repertoire appropriate for young children are introduced along with associated music skills. The subject may incorporate some multi-arts experiences.

Learning Objectives:

become aware of the unique ways of learning and knowing, which the Arts provide, as well as their strengths as sources of self esteem, cultural significance, communication, literacy and creative problem solving;

critically explore trends in Arts education philosophy and practice;

engage in motivating and inclusive learning experiences which integrate theory and practice, using a variety of media and pedagogical tools appropriate for early childhood Arts programs;

to critically review various state, national and international resources, teacher reference and curriculum documents relevant to Arts teaching with young children.

Assessment by:

Townsville

Participation (20%); assignment(s), email tasks and/or examinations (80%). Students must pass each major strand to pass the subject overall.

Cairns

Teaching portfolio (40%); participation (20%); assignment, in-class tests, performances and/or examinations (40%). Students must pass each major strand to pass the subject overall.
