Mathematics Education in Primary School

26 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials. Semester 1. External in Semester 1 for RATEP students only.

Compulsory for all undergraduate and graduate BEd programs in primary education. Graduate BEd students are required to take this subject with or before ED3491 .

This subject has been designed to equip preservice teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics to primary aged children in the new millenium.

Learning Objectives:

demonstrate an understanding of the learning processes used by primary school age children of different socio-cultural backgrounds in learning mathematics;

demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just mathematics curricula for primary school age children;

evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to primary school age children's learning stipulated in a National Statement on Mathematics for Australian Schools (1990);

explore ways of organising the learning environment to ensure effective learning and teaching;

construct and articulate a personal philosophy regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics in the new millenium.

Assessment by:

Townsville

Critique of an article from a professional journal (10%); folio of workshop activities (20%); tutorial presentation (20%); two-hour examination (50%).

Cairns

Tutorial attendance and participation (20%); Research in Teaching/Learning Mathematics (35%); two-hour examination (45%).

RATEP

Critique of an article from a professional journal (10%); workbook activities and teleconference participation (40%); assignment (20%); examination (30%).
