Health and Physical Education for Primary School

26 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials. Semester 2. External in Semester 2 for RATEP students.

Available to level 2 BEd students (core subject). It is recommended that graduate BEd students take this subject with or before ED3492 .

This subject assists students to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for planning, teaching, assessing and evaluating learnings in Health and Physical Education in the primary school based upon the Years 1-10 Health and Physical Education Syllabus and current trends within Australia. Students will examine the models influencing trends in Health and Physical Education, including outcomes based education, the social view of health, personal development, social justice principles and the importance of physical activity. Aproaches to developing learner-centred, integrated and inclusive curriculums are emphasised.

Learning Objectives:

to develop confidence and competence in structuring learning tasks and planning purposeful programs required in teaching the Years 1-10 Health and Physical Education curriculum;

to develop an understanding of and commitment to the role of physical activity, maximum participation and enjoyment within soical justice principles of diversity, supportive environments and equity;

to develop and apply a reflective and analytical view of teaching and teaching materials, and the student's own teaching of Health and Physical Education;

to develop the ability to work collaboratively with students, peers and the school community (school-based teacher educators, parents) as a basis for effective communication and long-term professional development.

Assessment by:

Examination (40%); portfolio (60%).

Cairns

Individual HPE experience critique (30%); in-class constructed portfolio (50%); school-based portfolio (20%).

RATEP

Teleconference preparation (30%); curriculum activities (30%); computer tasks (40%).
