Mathematics Education for Early Childhood

This subject has been designed to equip preservice teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics to young children (K-3).

Learning Objectives:

demonstrate an understanding of the learning processes used by young children of different socio-cultural backgrounds in learning mathematics;

demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just mathematics curricula for young learners;

evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to young children's learning, especially in pre-number and early number programs;

explore ways of organising the learning environment to ensure effective learning and teaching;

construct and articulate a personal philosophy regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics in the new millennium.

Assessment by:

Townsville

Critique of an article from a professional journal (10%); folio of workshop activities (20%); tutorial presentation (20%); two-hour examination (50%).

Cairns

Tutorial attendance and participation (20%); Research in Teaching/Learning Mathematics (35%); two-hour examination (45%).
