Integrated Earth System Science for Education

HECS Band 2

26 hours lectures, 13 hours practicals, 13 hours seminars, 4 hours field work. Semester 2.

Available ONLY to students enrolled in BEd (Primary), BEd (Secondary) and BEd (Early Childhood Education).

This subject is specifically designed to meet the needs of teachers of Science and SOSE in Queensland schools. It gives a comprehensive background knowledge to these areas, builds on an integrated systems approach and equips teachers with resources and ideas relevant to key learning areas of Science and SOSE. A strong emphasis is placed on the acquisition of practical skills and basic content knowledge necessary for the delivery of earth system science topics (geosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, resources) in the Queensland Science and SOSE syllabi.

Learning Objectives:

to obtain the background knowledge for the teaching of selected core contents in the Queensland Science and SOSE syllabi;

to develop practical skills for the teaching of selected Science and SOSE topics in Queensland schools;

to understand the content and learning objectives of resources available for the teaching of integrated earth system science at primary and junior secondary school levels.

Assessment by an end-of-semester examination (30%); quizzes/tests (10%); presentations (10%); practical tasks (30%); essays (20%).
