Available to students enrolled in MInfTech(E-Business) and MInfTech(E-Business)-MBA.

The aim of this subject is to provide an understanding of the importance of database technology in today's society and how they can use this technology to manage their own data requirements. The subject will include a detailed discussion of the database design and the relational database model.

Students will be required to demonstrate mastery of the topics covered at a level appropriate for postgraduate studies, including analysis and design capability and reporting and presentation abilities. These are to be demonstrated in assignments specific to postgraduate students, additional to those required of the undergraduate subject on which this subject piggybacks.

Learning Objectives:

describe the features of a database and a database management system;

describe the relational database model, its features and their rationale;

formulate queries in SQL;

understand the database development process;

model a database using the entity-relationship model;

use the techniques of normalisation and describe their basis;

implement a database design as a relational database using Access;

analyse and create an original design of a database, including reporting and presentation on the design.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (60%); quizzes/tests (10%); assignments (30%).
