Computer Science Project

Townsville, Cairns

HECS Band 2

Semester 1 and 2.

Available to Computer Science postgraduate students. Permission of the Head of School is also required.

A minor project in Computer Science/Information Technology to be carried out under the supervision of one or more staff members. The project will require a survey of relevant literature, an analysis of the problem to be solved, a high level design feasibility analysis and an interim project report and seminar. The project will then also require the detailed design and implementation of the solution and the verification and evaluation of the results. A complete account of the work done must be submitted in the final report, which should include a critical appraisal of the objectives, techniques and results of the project and also presented in a seminar.

Learning Objectives:

apply principles and methods of scientific thinking to a critical review and assessment of relevant literature;

formulate a problem and relate it to the literature review of (1) above;

complete a high level design and feasibility analysis;

present the results of (1), (2) and (3) in written form and in seminar form;

apply principles and methods of scientific research learned during execution of a supervised research project from inception to reporting of results;

develop project design management and implementation skills;

produce a substantial piece of technical report writing in the form of a minor thesis report and seminar.

Students should be able to demonstrate the required capabilities at a level appropriate for postgraduate studies, including advanced analysis, design, management, implementation and reporting skills.

Assessment in this subject involves on-course assessment including presentations, assignments and project reports. Full details of the assessment are published on the Web and handed out to students in the first week of the semester.
