Environmental Analytical Chemistry

Townsville

HECS Band 2

24 lectures. Second semester.

Modern developments in separation techniques. Chemometrics. Analytical applications of vibrational spectroscopy. Methods of elemental speciation in complex matrices. Environmental sampling and sample preparation. Surface sensitive techniques. Sample preparation and pre-concentration techniques. Projects may be offered in the areas of chromatography; electro- or spectro-analytical techniques, environmental analysis or marine chemistry.

Learning Objectives:

be familiar with recent developments in separation techniques used in analytical chemistry;

understand the capability of spectroscopy for quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis;

understand the importance of the form of chemical constituents in determining their environmental significance and be able to explain the capability of various techniques to identify different forms of chemical species.

Assessment by assignments and a three-hour examination.
