Townsville

HECS Band 2

32 hours lectures, 4 hours tutorials, 36 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Staff:

Dr B McCool,

Dr M Ridd.

An introduction to quantum mechanics and its applications to chemical systems, statistical thermodynamics and spectroscopy; an introduction to computational techniques for molecular structure; molecular mechanics; semi-empirical and ab-initio SCF methods; molecular dynamics; molecular modelling. Electrode kinetics.

Learning Objectives:

use modern computational techniques to model molecular structure and molecular modelling;

apply quantum mechanics to chemical problems;

understand the fundamentals and importance of electrode kinetics.

Assessment by an end-of-semester examination (70%); laboratory work and assignments (30%). It includes practical performance in the laboratory, the standard of written reports and demonstration of an adequate understanding of the chemistry involved in the assignments.
