Biological Chemistry

Cairns

HECS Band 2

33 hours lectures, 11 hours tutorials, 27 hours practicals, 10 hours computer aided modules. Semester 1.

Staff:

Dr M Liddell.

An introductory look at the major components of living systems from a molecular perspective. Acid/base chemistry, thermochemistry, kinetics and organic functional group chemistry. Natural product chemistry: extraction, analysis, spectroscopy; terpenes, steroids, alkaloids. Bio-organic chemistry: structure and function of carbohydrates, proteins and DNA. Bio-inorganic chemistry: chlorophyll, haemoglobin and carbonic anhydrase. Enzymnatic chemistry: the function of cofactors, coenzymes and vitamins. Lipids and membranes: fatty acids, the lipid bilayer, lipid proteins and the fluid mosaic model of the membrane. Passive and active transport. Bioenergetics: catabolic and anabolic reactions. The metabolic role of ATP. Glycogen synthesis/degradation. Glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. Electron transport. oxidative phosphorylation. Rubisco and the C3 photosynthetic pathway. DNA processes. replication, transcription and translation. Recombinant DNA, PCR and DNA sequencing.

Learning Objectives:

to gain a sound understanding of the major classes of compounds and the function of these compounds in biological chemistry;

be aware of the applicability of this branch of molecular science in a wider scientific context;

to be familiar with, and competent in, the application of a range of common laboratory techniques in biological chemistry.

Assessment by laboratory work and reports (20%); CAL modules (5%); tests (33%); two-hour examination (42%).
