Australian Indigenous Studies 2

This subject introduces students to the study of anthropology and sociology with specific reference to issues affecting Indigenous Australians. The content of this subject focuses on the effects these disciplines have had on the construction of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people and their identities. Topics include: who are the Indigenous people of Australia? the concept of culture; language and communication; the social significance of race; power and social inequality; religion; art and music.

Learning Objectives:

an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of Australian Indigenous cultures;

a critical awareness of the social, political and cultural forms of power that confront Indigenous Australians;

an ability to critically analyse information and research derived from anthropology;

an ability to recognise cultural difference and diversity in relation to sociological theories;

an awareness and an ability to distinguish between western sociological concepts and Australian Indigenous social realities;

an ability to demonstrate the necessary academic skills required for undertaking a critical analysis.

Assessment by essay (40%); oral presentation (20%); investigative journal (40%).
