HECS Band 2

52 hours lectures/workshops. Semester 2.

Available to Tertiary Access Course students.

Staff:

Mr M McLean (Townsville campus);

Ms K Debnam (Cairns campus).

The material covered will build upon mathematical aspects covered in BR1244 in Semester 1. The subject will focus on basic algebra, geometry, statistics, populations and sampling, statistical inference and comparison and whisker-box plot and standard deviation.

Learning Objectives:

utilise the student's mathematics skill for calculation of areas and perimeters of regular shapes;

obtain an understanding of three dimensional objects and the calculation of volume for regular geometric shapes;

learn trigonometric functions with calculations for angles and side lengths using tan, sin and cos ratios;

learn the properties of the straight line equation and graphing skills for plotting data, scattergram, pie chart, histogram;

learn population sampling, normal and random distribution, quantification of data sets using the average, mean, mode and the standard deviation of data sets. The concept of statistical inference along with linear regression analysis.

Assessment by assignments (40%); examination (60%).
