Introduction to Health and Biological Sciences 2

Available to Tertiary Access Course students.

This is the continuation of two semesters of biology as outlined in BR1236 . The subject covers biological aspects of health, the cellular bases of life, multicellular systems, with an emphasis on the anatomy, physiology and the diseases of the human circulatory and respiratory systems. Further organ systems are examined and their failings explained. Theory of biology is supplemented by laboratory experience in experiments relevant to these topics.

Learning Objectives:

learn the function and dysfunction of organ systems, the central role of genetics and the protective role and disorders of the immune system;

understand the function of major organ systems, their dysfunction in disease and the immune response in defence;

become competent in gathering and presenting biological data;

become familiar with organ dissections and laboratory procedures.

Assessment by laboratory reports (20%); assignments (40%); examination (40%).
