Introduction to Health and Biological Sciences 1

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials, 10 hours laboratories. Semester 1.

Available to Tertiary Access Course students.

This is the first of two semesters of biology which will integrate the core syllabus for years 11 and 12 as outlined by the Queensland Department of Education. The subject covers biological aspects of health, the cellular bases of life, multicellular systems, with an emphasis on the anatomy, physiology and the diseases of the human circulatory and respiratory systems. Theory of biology is supplemented by laboratory experience in experiments relevant to these topics.

Learning Objectives:

develop an understanding of the health care system and its component parts especially those relating to Indigenous health care;

develop an understanding of biodiversity and the fundamental importance of the theory of evolution in understanding the species concept;

become familiar with organ systems, their function and diseases that afflict them;

gain experience in gathering and presenting biological data;

become familiar with organ dissections and laboratory procedures.

Assessment by laboratory reports (20%); assignments (40%); examination (40%).
