52 hours lectures, 26 hours practicals. Semester 1 (Townsville, Cairns, Mt Isa, Thursday Island campus); Semester 1, Limited Attendance (Townsville campus).

The subject comprises an overview of cellular organisation, chemical and biochemical concepts, introductory and applied microbiology; classification of skeletal system, muscle, joints and tendons; the integument system; blood and lymph system; the immune system and the gastrointestinal system.

Learning Objectives:

to understand physiological systems and processes in the human body;

to understand fundamental concepts of chemistry and biological chemistry;

fundamentals of microbiology as it relates to health and disease;

to understand organ, tissue and cellular interrelationships;

to understand the gastrointestinal system.

Assessment for full-time students by examination (70%); practical (30%). Assessment for distance mode students by examination (40%); on-course assignments (30%); practical assignments (30%).
