This subject continues from BC4301 in the study of the clinical aspects of biochemical analysis. Endocrine function and analysis of disorders, protein and immunoglobulin determination, therapeutic drug monitoring and tumour markers, iron and lipid disorders. The issues of enzyme analysis and immunoassays will be discussed and practised. Advanced analytical methods will be introduced. The subject will use case study tutorial sessions to facilitate the teaching of the clinical interpretation of results. This subject completes the professional competency required for a graduate clinical biochemistry, medical laboratory scientist.

Learning Objectives:

broaden skills in analytical method development;

develop knowledge in the clinical relevance of enzyme, protein, hormone, lipid and iron determination;

be aware of the application of advanced instrumentation;

develop proficiency in the interpretation of results of clinical biochemistry investigations;

achieve a level of proficiency required for employment in a medical laboratory.

Assessment by theory examination (50%); practical examination (35%); assignment (15%).
