The Practice of Cultural Heritage Management

This subject offers a practical overview of the process of cultural heritage management. It introduces students to the notion of `heritage values' which are used (both nationally and internationally) to define and assess the cultural significance of heritage places. The subject will also introduce students to a range of concepts surrounding the presentation of heritage places to the public. It will examine issues surrounding the role and nature of `interpretation' and the application of a range of media in relation to this.

Learning Objectives:

develop an understanding of the processes involved in the identification, assessment and management of cultural heritage places;

develop an understanding of the purpose of public interpretation in relation to heritage places, including a range of issues associated with this;

develop an understanding of the range of media through which `interpretation' can be achieved.

Assessment by written assignments (100%).
