HECS Band 2

Semester 1 (February to May) and Semester 2 (September to December).
This subject is delivered via the Internet using Blackboard through Learn JCU. Each week the student will be given an appropriate mixture of lecture material, assignment material, readings and self learning. Assessment will probably be on a week-by-week basis and there will be a final research report and research seminar.
The subject involves content and student workoad equivalent to other subjects in the program.

Available only to students enrolled in the Master of Astronomy and Doctor of Astronomy.

Staff:

Assoc. Professor G White.

This subject is the start of the research project/thesis in the Doctor of Astronomy degree. It is the second of the two research subjects in the Doctorate program. This is an original research project. Topics will be in observational astronomy and astrophysics. It is expected that students will use primary research data and that the presented material will be in a form suited for publication (if of a sufficient standard).

Learning Objectives:

introduction to the way astronomical data is handled;

introduction to the way in which the Universe is studied at an advanced level;

introduction to advanced measurement techniques;

learn of the limitations in experimental work, and the sources of error that are present, and how error is eliminated in experimental work;

learn the vocabulary of science and the think processes of scientists;

learn written and verbal communication skills;

learn high level computing and software skills;

learn high level instrumentation skills.

Assessment by three essays (10% each) (30%); research report (70%).
