Advanced Maritime Archaeology Reading Course

5 hours supervisory time in flexible delivery. Semester 2.

Available to either upper level students in a bachelors degree majoring in archaeology having completed AR3401 Maritime Archaeology and AR3409 Archaeology of Maritime Societies and Industries or students who already hold at least a bachelors degree with a major in archaeology having completed AR3401 , AR3409 and AR3402 Maritime Archaeology Field School and who wish to fulfil the requirements of Part 1 of the Graduate Diploma of Maritime Archaeology.

The aim of this reading course is to expand upon the practical aspects of AR3402 Field Techniques in Maritime Archaeology by considering some of the theoretical and methodological issues underlying maritime archaeological investigation. There will be three themes to the course: (a) hypothesis formation and problem-oriented research in maritime archaeology; (b) explicit research design in maritime archaeology; (c) analysis and interpretation of the results of maritime archaeological investigation.

Learning Objectives:

provide structured reading in research methodologies in maritime archaeology;

increase understandings of the place of maritime archaeology in general archaeological theory and more broadly in the history of the philosophy of science;

increase students' ability to critique research design, sampling and recovery methods and relevant data recovery techniques as these are articulated in excavation reports;

increase students' awareness of major international research trends in maritime archaeology.

Assessment by a formal 4,000 word essay at level 5 standing.
