Historical Archaeology

This subject will review the international development of historical archaeology as a major sub-discipline of archaeological investigation. Special emphasis will be given to Australian and maritime related themes, including the archaeology of early Macassan and European contact with Australia, maritime industries and shipwreck survivor camps. The subject will also address broader theoretical and substantive issues such as the archaeology of European settlement in Australia, domestic life, institutions, ethnicity, industry, standing structures and cultural landscapes, as well as contact archaeology.

Learning Objectives:

acquire knowledge of a range of theoretical frameworks and associated methodology for investigating the archaeology of historical sites and structures;

understand the role and contribution of archaeology to understanding or reinterpreting the historic past;

understand the relationship between archaeological and documentary research and data;

acquire skills in the investigation, recording and analysis of historical archaeological sites and artefacts.

Assessment by tutorial presentation and paper (25%); major essay (25%); two-hour end-of-semester examination (50%).
