Understanding Professional Helping

20 hours lectures, 24 hours practicals or the equivalent in mixed mode on-campus delivery. Semester 2 at all campuses. Semester 1, Limited Attendance (Townsville campus).

This subject introduces students to the world of professional practice — its issues, concerns, dilemmas and possibilities. The principles of social justice are considered in relation to such practice with emphasis given to group work methodology.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand the differences between professional and non-professional approaches to helping;
  2. be able to articulate the theoretical and ideological bases of welfare practice;
  3. engage a case scenario from a groupwork perspective demonstrating the ability to integrate theory with practice at the assessment, intervention and evaluation stages of professional practice.

Assessment by presentation and/or written assignment (100%).
