Visual Arts Studies 1A

Cairns HECS Band 1

13 hours lectures, 36 hours workshops. Semester 1.

This subject is intended to enrich and deepen students’ understanding of the visual arts as great achievements and expressions of humanity. Students will be introduced to the complex cultural and historical framework of Western art and to the art of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. A series of workshops will provide a practical application of art skills in the areas of painting, drawing and pottery.

Lectures: A weekly lecture program is supported by on-line art history modules. Enrolled students should attend the lectures and access the modules and other subject information on Learn JCU.

Workshops: Students attend one workshop of three hours per week.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop practical skills in a range of mediums and understand their characteristics and functions;
  2. develop a critical appreciation of the visual arts and an awareness of their social, cultural and historical context.

Assessment by two art history tests (25% each); practical portfolio (50%).
