Host-Parasite Relationships

A tutorial/seminar–based subject dealing with concepts and specific topics in parasitology. Interactions between parasites and their hosts from the molecular, biochemical and physiological to the population level are examined with reference to specific organisms.
Learning Objectives:
- discuss the evolution and basic theories of parasitism as a way of life;
- understand the mechanisms by which the hosts attempt to control the growth, development and multiplication of parasites and how parasites evade these processes;
- discuss the means by which parasitic infections lead to parasitic disease and the pathogenic mechanisms involved;
- understand the epidemiology of parasitic diseases and the principles involved in development and application of mathematical/computer models of parasitic diseases.
Assessment by seminar presentations (50%); written assignments (50%).
