This subject introduces the specific and distinct area of club management in Australia. Although this is a clearly identifiable division of the hospitality industry, the subject builds upon students’ existing knowledge of several other areas of management and that which has been acquired through practical experience. However, this subject provides the applied knowledge and skills necessary for effective and efficient management of registered and licensed clubs in Australia. Each topic begins with a number of explicit aims students will need to consider whilst progressing through the material. Some of these outcomes are related to acquisition of new knowledge and understanding theoretical perspectives and others concern competencies and skills.
Learning Objectives:
- acquire knowledge of key factors influencing the development of the club industry, the current status of the club industry, its organisational structure, stakeholder roles and legal obligations;
- acquire knowledge of key functional areas of clubs;
- acquire knowledge of the competitive environment, socio-economic impacts and gaming products and develop an ability to identify both the positive and negative impacts of gaming;
- develop an ability to integrate operational and functional areas of clubs;
- develop an ability to critically evaluate (organisational) internal and external environments with the aim of seeking and maintaining competitive advantage.
Assessment by two group presentation/projects (15% each); individual project (3000 words) (30%); a three-hour examination (40%).
