Club operations are amongst the most dynamic and topical sectors of the hospitality industry and are the main revenue producing areas in casinos and registered clubs in most Australian states. The substantial revenue derived from gambling has resulted in accelerating growth in the size, scope and number of establishments both nationally and internationally. In an increasingly competitive environment, a range of managerial skills and operational knowledge is required to effectively manage club operations to provide customers with facilities and services which meet their needs, adhere to legal requirements, provide adequate security and recognise the social and economic impacts of gaming.
Learning Objectives:
- assessment of ethical, political, economic, social and technological influences on the historical development and growth of gambling operations in Australia;
- evaluate the role of key stakeholders in legalised commercial gambling and the socio-economic impacts of gambling on these stakeholders;
- discuss consumer behaviour in gambling, including motivations and participation in different types of gambling;
- explain the organisational structure of clubs and casinos and their legal, administrative and operation responsibilities;
- compare the competitive performance, management and operation of major forms of gambling in Australia and the opportunities and challenges they face.
Assessment by group presentation/project (20%); individual project (3,000 words) (40%); three-hour examination (40%).
