Infection Control in Health Care Settings

Townsville HECS Band 2

Semester 2. Limited Attendance (residential in July/August).

Staff: Assoc. Professor R Speare, Mr D Rowbottom, Mrs S White (Coordinators).

The subject aims: to provide an academic award in infection control that is responsive to learning needs, national accreditation requirements and requirements of employers; to educate health professionals about infection control in a range of health care settings particularly where resources are limited. Focus will be on infection control in rural and remote settings in Australia and in developing countries.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate evidence of a comprehensive understanding of infection control principles, strategies and policies in a range of health care settings in the developed and developing worlds;
  2. describe the chain of infection, non-specific and specific host immune responses;
  3. discuss the significance of nosocomial diseases and their causative pathogens;
  4. demonstrate skills in basic laboratory bacteriological techniques and techniques for collection and transport of clinical specimens;
  5. discuss strategies to enhance a successful team approach to infection control;
  6. discuss the importance of building design and infrastructure in infection control;
  7. discuss strategies for the education of health personnel in infection control and continuing professional development of infection control personnel.

Assessment by one take home examination (10%); final theory examination (50%); laboratory competencies (20%); assignment (20%).
