Cardio-Vascular Medicine and Ventilation of Neonates

Semester 1 and 2. Limited Attendance.

Available to students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma of Neonatology.

Staff: Dr J Whitehall.

Review of normal and abnormal development of cardiac and vascular physiology and pathology associated with common cardio-vascular conditions and their modern management in neonatal settings. Review of the practice of ventilation of neonates. This subject will complement the practical skills gained whilst students are working in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop an understanding of cardio-vascular physiology and pathology relevant to the neonate;
  2. to acquire the underpinning knowledge and skills to recognise, investigate and manage the common problems of neonatal cardio-vascular function;
  3. to acquire the theoretical skills to manage these problems in the context of a modern Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit;
  4. to develop an understanding of the theory of ventilatory techniques of the neonate.

Assessment by assignments (70%); final examination (30%).
