Gender and Development *

Available to students undertaking postgraduate coursework in Asia- Pacific Community Development studies.

This subject is a high level critical reading subject done as a coursework component of postgraduate studies in Asia-Pacific Community Development. It explores social and economic development theories and their relation to contemporary formations of gender in the Asia-Pacific region. Changing work practices, domestic environments and sexual relations are examined from the perspective of postcolonial, feminist and practice-oriented theory.

Learning Objectives:

1. examine the theoretical and ideological issues linking gender and development;
2. critically evaluate the link between gender and development through several case studies from the Asia-Pacific region;
3. assess changes to family structure in the context of changing patterns of work, poverty and development;
4. identify key issues involving gender relations, civil unrest and political reform.

Assessment by written assignments (100%).
