Child Welfare Practice

78 hours (flexible delivery). Semester 2.

This subject is an introduction to child welfare practice. Topics covered will include definitions of child protection, child abuse and child neglect; the history of Indigenous and non-Indigenous child welfare, the social and political contexts of child maltreatment and child welfare intervention, alternative care, case management and child welfare legislation and policies. There is a special emphasis on research-based practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to examine child welfare practice from a social justice perspective, paying particular attention to definitions of child protection, child abuse and child neglect;
  2. to become familiar with the history of child welfare in Australia;
  3. to understand the social and political contexts of child maltreatment and child welfare intervention, including a critical understanding of Indigenous child welfare;
  4. to gain a knowledge of child welfare legislation, policies and case management.

Assessment by project (50%); written assignments/workbooks (50%).
