Vocational Health and Safety

39 hours lectures, 10 hours workshop, 12 hours field. Semester 2.

Completion of this subject will qualify the student as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer in the Services Industries. Services Industries are all industries that are not manufacturing or construction.

The subject has four units of competency: WHSO/01 – provide advice on Workplace Health and Safety; WHSO/02 – manage health and safety hazards and risks in the workplace; WHSO/03 – manage workplace incidents; WHSO/06 – manage health and safety in service based workplaces.

The units cover the Queensland Workplace Health and Safety Legislation; risk management principles applied to health and safety including noise, manual handling, plant and hazardous substances; health and safety policies, procedures, planning and cost analysis; workplace health and safety auditing; accident investigation; workplace health and hygiene; communicable diseases.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to obtain the competency to advise relevant parties of a workplace on health and safety issues;
  2. to obtain the competency to undertake risk management on hazards identified in a workplace;
  3. to obtain the competency to record, investigate and evaluate workplace incidents;
  4. to obtain the competency to manage health and safety issues related to service based workplaces.

Assessment by four on-course examinations and one project.
