Medium and Large Format Photography

Available to Bachelor of Photography students.

This subject will introduce students to the use of medium format cameras and to the theory and operation of large format monorail cameras. Students will also become familiar with processing and printing medium and large format films. Topics to be covered include: use and operation of medium format cameras; principles of a monorail camera; parallel displacement; swing and tilt; modifying perspective; changing the plane of focus; Scheimpflug Principle; depth of field; exposure measurement and bellows compensation; operation of large format enlargers.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand the operation and achieve competence in the use of medium format cameras;
  2. acquire an understanding of the principles involved in large format photography;
  3. develop basic competency in the operation of large format cameras;
  4. apply creative maxims, strategies and outcomes to the production of a folio of work representing the student’s personal artistic direction, using medium and large format cameras.

Assessment by four practical assignments (80%); written examination (20%).
